Strategies for now
The international conference “Craftsmanship in the 21st century – strategies for now” intends to start an invigorating discussion around practical solutions for the continuity of know-how and vitality of the craftsmanship sector in the 21st century, through bringing together representatives of a selection of active national and international proponents.
This year we will focus on exploring the existing Portuguese ecosystem in conversation with relevant international case studies, creating a dialog for exchange and opportunities to cultivate collaborations.
All topics will be oriented towards ecological, social and economic sustainability. The conference will be held in Portuguese, French and English.
Bringing to the discussion speakers from diverse backgrounds, the key-themes will be:
This panel discusses the role of policy in supporting the continuity of intangible heritage and knowhow in the craftsmanship sector. Looking at local and international policy structures, analyzing markers of success as well as important factors including the motives behind these policies, and beneficiaries thereof.
This panel will discuss strategies for activating networks of craftspeople in ways that establish these professions as viable for practicing craftspeople and future generations, giving value to their work. Further investigating the role documentation plays in this process, and how through research, specific programs can and have been designed for specific communities with examples of what these programs look like and the impact they have.
Focusing on the pressing issue of who the future craftspeople will be, and where and how they will be trained. This panel is dedicated to forms of education for knowledge transfer, from institutional to one-on-one. Discussing different structures, age groups, socio-economic groups and what is urgently needed now. Presenting case studies that have proven successful as well as possible 21st century renditions that are specific to our current educational and craftsmanship ecosystems.
Luxury, sustainable, local, international, economic empowerment, digital tools: in this panel we will discuss the current markets for craftsmanship from luxury to local and sustainable. Models of connecting craftspeople to appropriate markets, strategies for success and programs that support viable economic sustainability of their businesses.
